Preventative Dentistry & Oral Healthcare in Neston

At Raby Road Dental Centre we understand that oral hygiene is vital for your dental health and your overall wellbeing too. We prefer to prevent problems from occurring rather than simply fixing things when they go wrong. We recommend regular dental visits for examinations and hygiene treatments to ensure your mouth, teeth and gums remain in great condition.

Dental Hygiene

The best way to look after your teeth and gums is to eat and drink healthily. Cut down on sugary foods and fizzy drinks and if you are going to have a sugary treat keep it to meal times. Brush your teeth last thing at night and one other time during the day for 2 minutes each time with a toothbrush and 1450ppm fluoride toothpaste (please ask your dentist what to use for your child at each age.) Make sure that you brush the inner, outer and biting surfaces of your teeth. Spit out your toothpaste and do not rinse after brushing as this washes away the fluoride that is helping keep your teeth healthy.

Many people get bleeding gums and a build-up of tartar on their teeth. To help prevent this, floss twice daily and use an interdental brush. Please visit our friendly hygienist for more advice and book an oral hygiene appointment for a clean (scale and polish) to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Pit & Fissure Sealant

As each of the adult molars (back teeth) appear, and if the tooth is free from decay, a ‘pit and fissure sealant’ can be used to protect the tooth. The sealant is a plastic coating that fills all the little crevices in the tooth surface, creating a flat surface that is easier to clean. Adults can also have this treatment if the teeth are free from decay. Your dental team will discuss whether this is right for you. Children can also have fluoride varnish painted onto their teeth twice a year which will help to reduce the chances of decay. The best way to prevent dental decay is by brushing your teeth thoroughly last thing at night and at least one other time during the day, with fluoride toothpaste. Make sure that you brush the inner, outer and biting surfaces of your teeth. Using ‘interdental' brushes, or dental floss or tape, also helps to remove plaque and food from between your teeth and where they meet the gums. An ordinary toothbrush cannot reach these areas.

Screening for Mouth Cancer

Mouth cancer can happen to any age group; however is more common amongst smokers and those who drink above the recommended weekly alcohol intake for men and women (14 units for both men and women/week). It is important that you visit your dentist regularly for an oral cancer assessment to keep you healthy and allow any early signs of mouth cancer to be noted. Please book an appointment with one of our dentists should you have any concerns or queries and we will be happy to help.
